The Top 5 Must-Knows About Allergic Dermatitis for Every Dog Owner!

Hey there, fellow dog enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into a topic that's crucial for every pup parent to understand: allergic dermatitis. It may sound like a mouthful, but don't worry, we're here to break it down into bite-sized pieces of knowledge that'll have you and your furry friend feeling more confident and comfortable.
  1. Identifying the Culprits: Allergic dermatitis essentially means your pup's skin is having a bit of a reaction to something in their environment or diet. It could be anything from pollen and dust mites to certain foods or even fleas! Keep an eye out for signs like itching, redness, or skin infections. And remember, sometimes it takes a bit of detective work to pinpoint the exact trigger, so don't hesitate to reach out to your vet for guidance.
  2. Proper Vet Care is Key: Speaking of vets, never underestimate the importance of their expertise when it comes to managing allergic dermatitis. They can help diagnose the specific allergens bothering your pooch and prescribe the right treatment plan, whether it's medicated shampoos, antihistamines, or dietary changes. Regular check-ups ensure your dog's skin health stays on track!
  3. Ditching the Itch: Itching is often the most uncomfortable symptom for our furry pals. To help soothe their skin, try giving them regular baths with gentle, hypoallergenic shampoos and keep their bedding clean to minimize allergen exposure. Your vet may also recommend supplements like omega-3 fatty acids to support healthy skin.
  4. Allergy-Proofing Your Home: Just like us, dogs can benefit from an allergy-friendly environment. Vacuum regularly to keep dust and pollen at bay, wash their bedding in hot water, and consider investing in air purifiers to improve indoor air quality. It's all about creating a safe haven for your four-legged friend!
  5. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Last but not least, don't go it alone! Connect with fellow dog lovers and experts for support and advice. Hey there, fellow dog enthusiasts! Whether you've just welcomed a wiggly ball of fur into your home, you're considering it, or you have a canine companion already - establishing solid communication with your furry friend is key to fostering a strong bond. As a seasoned dog owner, trainer, breeder, and lover of all things canine, I'm here to share with you the top five ways to kickstart communication with your new pup!

  1. Start with Patience and Positivity: Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a perfect pup-human connection. Patience is your best friend when it comes to training. Celebrate every tiny victory with heaps of praise and the occasional tiny treat. Positive reinforcement is the name of the game!
  2. Establish Consistent Commands: Consistency is crucial for your pup to understand what you're trying to communicate. Stick to simple, clear commands like "sit," "stay," and "come," and use them consistently. Repetition is key here! Your pup will catch on quicker than you think.
  3. Body Language Speaks Louder Than Words: Dogs are masters of reading body language, so use this to your advantage. Pay attention to your posture, tone of voice, and facial expressions when communicating with your pup. They're always watching!
  4. Engage in Interactive Play: Playtime isn't just about fun—it's a fantastic way to communicate and bond with your pup. Interactive toys like tug ropes and balls can help strengthen your connection while keeping your pup mentally stimulated.
  5. Be Present and Listen: Communication is a two-way street. Take the time to really tune in to your pup's cues and body language. Are they wagging their tail happily or tucking it between their legs nervously? Understanding their signals will deepen your bond and help you address their needs more effectively.
And hey, speaking of communication and learning, why not join us for some Breeder Knows? Every Wednesday on Instagram LIVE at @shurbeezshihtzu or @lake_mountain_way my sister and I take turns hosting Breeder Knows LIVE where we share tips, tricks, advice, and information to help you and your pup thrive. Unraveling the Mystery:            Why Do Shih Tzu Puppies Sleep So Much?

Welcome, fellow dog enthusiasts, to Shurbeezshihtzu.com!

Today, let's delve into a question that often leaves new puppy parents scratching their heads: Why do those adorable Shih Tzu puppies sleep so much?

As a seasoned breeder with 24 years of experience, I've had the privilege of witnessing the delightful journey of Shih Tzu pups from birth to adulthood. Allow me to shed some light on this common puppy behavior.

Firstly, it's essential to understand that puppies, like human babies, undergo rapid growth and development. During their early weeks, Shih Tzu puppies spend the majority of their time sleeping, often up to 18 to 20 hours a day! This extensive slumber is crucial for their physical and mental development.

Their sleep patterns are influenced by various factors, including age, environment, and activity level. As they grow, puppies experience several developmental milestones, such as sensory exploration, teething, and learning basic commands. All of these activities can be exhausting, leading to increased sleep needs.

Furthermore, puppies have shorter sleep cycles compared to adult dogs, meaning they enter the restorative REM (rapid eye movement) sleep more frequently. This deep sleep phase is vital for memory consolidation and brain development.

So, the next time you find your Shih Tzu pup dozing off for the umpteenth time, rest assured it's all part of their natural growth process. Embrace these precious moments, and cherish the journey as your furry companion blossoms into a magnificent adult Shih Tzu.
